• We are working closely with Public Health and will provide updates as soon as information becomes available.

Work continues at the new Fairvern both inside and out.

The landscaping team is completing the curbing around the building and as well as rough ins for the snow melt areas (receiving dock and main entrance).

Handrails are being installed in Home Areas.

Epoxy floor being laid in tub, shower and food service areas.

Resident vanities being installed in suites.

On the operational side:

Plans are being finalized for Orientation to the new home.

The Move Plan is being created, stay tuned for more information.

Residents are choosing rooms.

Recruitment timelines are being reviewed and schedule put in place for recruitment activities and hiring.

CANADA DAY – JULY 1^ST

Strawberries & Ice Cream or Butter Tart & Ice Cream Fundraiser

As part of Huntsville’s Canada Day Celebrations, we set up at Rivermill Park to sell Strawberries and Ice Cream or a Home Baked Butter Tart & Ice Cream to the public.

We had a great afternoon at Taylor’s Strawberry Farm on Tuesday June 23^rd and picked an abundance of strawberries so we can use their berries for our fundraiser and in our pies. We’d like to thank Aaron and Sarah of Taylor’s Strawberry Farm once again for providing us with 2 flats of picked strawberries at their cost to assist us in our fundraising endeavours this year. Our ice cream has been donated by Kawartha Dairy & Chapman’s Ice Cream Company.

Friends of Fairvern’s Tag Day

The Friends of Fairvern’s Tag Day is being held on Friday July 31^st at various locations around Huntsville and in some of the surrounding towns.

If you or someone you know can help us Tag for even a few hours on that day, please contact Marlene Schell at 705-789-4363 or come by the Fairvern Chapel on Thursday July 23^rd at 1:00 pm to find out how you can help. This is one of our largest fundraisers of the year so we need as many people as possible to ensure that we have enough taggers to cover all the venues that have given us permission to set up at their place of business.

This year the Fairvern Staff have requested that we purchase the residents a Tovertafel (English for “Magic Table”).

Developed in the Netherlands, the Tovertafel is a games system that has proven to have a positive impact on the quality of life of seniors living with dementia. Through inter-active light projections, the games stimulate physical activity, social interaction, and cognition.

Executive Committee Members were able to review the benefits of the Tovertafel & feel that it would be a wonderful addition to the Home and provide support to the staff in providing an increasing quality of care on a daily basis especially when faced with challenging situations, such as restlessness, agitation, and apathy.

Introducing Engage+: New Family Portal Coming July 18

Fairvern is pleased to announce the launch of a new resident and family portal for authorized family members. In partnership with Evoke Health, an Ontario-based company, we are introducing Engage+—a secure, online portal that provides access to important health information and home updates at no cost.

Through Engage+, you will be able to access key information directly from our clinical charting system. At launch, this will include:

• Medications
• Conditions
• Immunizations
• Allergies
• Vital signs
• Care plans
• Invoices

You will also have access to home updates such as newsletters, educational resources, activity calendars, and more.

Privacy & Security
Protecting resident information is a top priority. Engage+ uses advanced encryption and security measures to ensure all personal and health information is safe and secure.

Stay Connected
This new portal will help you stay informed and connected to your loved one’s care, reducing the need to call the home for routine updates.

Getting Started

• Authorized family members will receive an email invitation on July 16. We are currently obtaining consent.
• If you do not receive your invitation by the end of the day, please check your spam/junk folder.
• For assistance, please contact support@evokehealth.ca.

We will be using the Engage+ portal to share updates and keep you informed about events in our community. We encourage you to activate your account as soon as you receive your invitation.

We are excited to launch this platform at Fairvern and look forward to working together to make it a success.

Sprinkler Compliance

As background, the Province required all long-term care homes to install automatic sprinkler systems by December 31, 2024, as part of broader life-safety improvements. For Fairvern, meeting that requirement would have meant construction to an aging building that is scheduled to close.

In December 2024, the Province extended the deadline to July 1, 2026 for eligible homes. Fairvern met all of the conditions, through the redevelopment and relocation to a new, fully compliant home.

Since February 1, 2025, the following measures have been in place:

• Positioning additional fire extinguishers throughout the facility
• Conducting fire safety training twice annually
• Scheduling dedicated staff to complete fire watch rounds
• Maintaining quarterly fire drills observed by the Fire Department

While construction of the new Fairvern home has advanced considerably, the project will not be completed by the July 1, 2026 deadline. After July 1, 2026, we will coordinate with the Fire Department to allow for the issuance of a formal fire code order related to sprinkler compliance. This order will:

• Formally recognize the temporary non-compliance, and
• Establish a compliance timeline aligned with the anticipated move into the new Fairvern home

We will continue with Fire Watch rounds during this period and the other measures currently in place and coordinate closely with the Fire Department to ensure safety remains our top priority.

Redevelopment Update

Construction of the new Fairvern home continues to move forward, with steady progress being made across all phases of the project both construction and operationally. However, it has become clear that the construction schedule has been extended beyond the original timeline. At this time, construction is expected to be completed in early November 2026, and our move will not occur, prior to the July 1, 2026 deadline for sprinkler compliance in LTC homes. We recognize the importance of this requirement and are actively working with the Fire Department to manage this interim period in a transparent and responsible manner. The plan will be publicly posted once completed, outlining the path to full compliance which will be achieved when we move into the new, fully sprinklered home.

Thank you for the continued patience and understanding of our residents, families, staff, and community partners as we work toward completing this important project. We look forward to welcoming everyone into the new Fairvern home once construction is complete.

Friends of Fairvern Baking

The Friends of Fairvern’s freezer located at the rear of the Rose Room (1^st Floor Dining Room) is stocked once again with a variety of Fruit pies such as Apple, Strawberry/Rhubarb, Bumbleberry, Rhubarb, Raisin, & for the 1^st time Cherry Pies.

Once again, we have both large pot pies and some small pot pies for those who have smaller appetites or live alone.

**For those who are new to Fairvern or have not purchased our baking before, all you need to do is take your choice from the freezer and if paying cash, leave your money in the black cash box mounted on the wall to the right of the freezer. Prices for the different types of pies and tarts are posted on the outside of the freezer.

All the money raised goes towards enhancing the Residents’ lives so please think of The Friends’ baking when you’re planning your next get together.

Community Highlights

In April, we proudly celebrated Earth Day by taking part in a community clean-up initiative. Residents and staff worked together to tidy the Fairvern front area and Mountainview Road, collecting a very full bag of garbage! To celebrate our efforts, everyone enjoyed some delicious cupcakes—a well-earned treat.

Supporting a Meaningful Cause

We are excited to participate in our 2nd Annual Alzheimer’s Walk on May 14 at 2:00 pm. Dementia impacts many of our residents, making this cause especially close to our hearts.

We encourage everyone to consider making a donation—contributions will be accepted until May 31. Our fundraising goal is $200.

Mask Use Update for Visitors – Effective Wednesday, April 1^st

We are pleased to share an important update regarding our masking requirements. Effective Wednesday, April 1st, masks will become optional for visitors in all resident areas.

We’re excited to finally see your smiles again — and we know our residents will be too! 😊

Please note that any individual who prefers to continue wearing a mask is absolutely welcome to do so. We respect and support everyone’s comfort level and personal choice.

Hand Hygiene Remains Essential

While masks are becoming optional for visitors, our commitment to safety stays the same. Proper hand hygiene is one of the most effective tools we have to protect ourselves and our residents. Please complete hand hygiene (alcohol based hand rub or hand washing) when you arrive and when you leave the home, at minimum.

We want to extend our sincere appreciation to everyone for your cooperation, understanding, and commitment. Your ongoing dedication to the health and safety of our residents, staff, and community has made a tremendous difference.

New Build Update

Construction continues to progress on our new home, both inside and out. The current projected completion date is October 6, 2026. Following this date, the home will be orientating staff to the home and getting ready for Ministry of Long Term Care Occupancy inspection. Following a successful inspection, we will move our current Residents in. There will be much more information in the coming months and encourage you to take part in the monthly Town Hall meetings.

Work Currently Underway:

· Interior finishing in resident rooms and common areas including painting and flooring installation

· Installation of mechanical and electrical systems on the main floor including the main kitchen

· Landscaping preparation where weather permits which will include construction of a retaining wall on the east side

· Beginning of finishing of the Child Care space

We look forward to sharing more updates as the project advances. Please take some time to view the photos and home layout posted in the lower level and reach out with any questions. Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm as we move closer to opening our new home!

Room Choices – Update for Residents

Thank you to everyone who has shared their preferred room type for the new home. We appreciate your prompt responses and participation in this process.

What Happens Next

The next step will be selecting the location of your room. We are currently waiting for the architect to provide the finalized floor plan, including room numbers.

Once the floor plan is received, it will be posted in the front lobby for everyone to review. Photos showing the views from various room locations will also be available to help you make an informed choice.

How Room Selection Will Work

The Resident Council has decided that room selections will be made in order of length of residency at Fairvern—starting with the resident who has lived here the longest and continuing from there.

We will communicate as soon as these materials are ready for your review.

Huntsville Legion Craft & Vendor Market

We are very pleased with the success of the fundraiser held at the Huntsville Legion’s Craft & Vendor Show on March 28th. The amount raised is still being tabulated and that information will be provided next month.

The winner of our Easter Bunny Basket Draw was Kelly Beach a volunteer with Muskoka Seniors. Kelly attended the Craft Show as a Vendor selling new & gently used jewelry that had been donated to the Muskoka Seniors to assist them in their efforts to raise money for their organization. (Please see the Friends of Fairvern’s Facebook page for pictures of Kelly and the Easter basket she won.) A big thank you goes to Marg Dollar for putting the Easter Bunny basket together. It was so cute!

We sold out of most of our frozen pies and tarts so unfortunately our freezer has very little remaining in it. Please stay tuned though as we plan to make some more pies later in April.

Thank you again to those who provided baking for our bake sale, those of you who supported us by coming by and purchasing some of our baking or who ordered food from the kitchen. March was quite a busy month for our Residents at Fairvern! We started a book club and are collectively reading a book called “Liar Liar”. It is a humourous book about a woman named Cat and details her adventures as a private detective catching criminals. This will continue through April as we get further along in our book. We had lots of entertainment, including a new performer, Brent Meidinger. He wowed us with his voice and his energy! St. Patrick’s Day brought us lots of green—including green beer! We also got to learn our leprechaun names such as Shamrock O’Lucky. Finally, we tried a new game called Cheesie Head! Residents loved being able to throw cheesies at our volunteer targets (and eat the cheesies too!). Please take a look at our April calendar and see all the events planned for the month. Family and friends are welcome to join us for any program listed on the calendar. Residents love sharing these events with you!
