    Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has placed the Maple and Birch Home Areas in heightened surveillance as of April 4, 2022. Two staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 at this time, but do not have a link within the home. A handful of residents required isolation related to high-risk contact. The family members of the affected residents have been notified and we will continue to update with any changes.

    The Ministry is shifting to a guidance- based approach to support long-term care homes with employer-driven immunization policies. Please review the attached Updated Vaccination Policy from The Pines LTC Home with guidance from the Ministry of Long Term Care and the District Municipality of Muskoka to ensure that our policies aligns.

    COVID-19 Vaccination Policy Updated March 11, 2022

    General Visitors will require to show proof of full vaccination effective March 14, 2022, if five (5) years of age or older. This will continue until March 21, 2022, after this date General Visitors will be able to enter the home without proof of vaccination. If proof is not provided by the general visitor, the visit with the resident will be restricted to their bedroom only.

    All IPAC practices continue at this time:

    physical distancing;

    medical masks at all times in the home;

    No eating or drinking with residents;

    Use of designated areas for eating and drinking if required

    The Ministry has updated the Minister's Directive on Surveillance testing and access to homes to reflect the most recent advice from the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health. Updates will be effective March 14, 2022:

    • Individuals who have had a confirmed case of COVID-19 infection will be required to resume surveillance testing 90 days post-infection (previously 30 days post-infection).
    • Surveillance testing will no longer be required for outdoor visits. (Masks will still be required for outdoor visits)
    • Recommend using combined oral and nasal sampling when using rapid antigen tests for surveillance testing.

    Daily active screening and rapid antigen testing will continue for all individuals entering the LTC home unless an exception applies, as noted above.

    The Ministry of Long-Term Care continues with the easing of the temporary measures that were put in place to reduce the impact of the Omicron wave on Long-term care residents. Consistent with their shared goal to strike an appropriate balance between the risk of COVID-19 and overall resident quality of life and health and wellbeing. The following changes are being made effective March 14, 2022:

    • All general visitors, including children under the age of five (5), can resume visits. General visitors, with the exception of children under the age of five (5), will need to follow the vaccination policy of the individual long-term care home.
    • Limits on outdoor visits will be lifted and homes can return to their regular practices on the use of available outdoor spaces.
    • The limit on indoor visits will increase to four (4) general visitors and/or caregivers per resident at a time, as previously communicated.
    • All residents will be able to go on overnight absences.
    • Testing of residents returning from a day or overnight absences at established intervals will continue until further notice, to identify as early as possible any individual who may become infected with COVID-19 in order to reduce transmission in the home.
    • Cohorting will no longer be required for social activities although this practice must be maintained for dining.
    • Social group activities can be increased in size (i.e. more than 10) while larger social group activities, where potential crowding can occur, should continue to be avoided, and IPAC measures should continue to be followed by staff, residents, and visitors to promote safety and wellbeing (e.g., masking, distancing, good ventilation, etc. )
    • Vaccinated visitors will be able to assist their loved one in the dining room or to an activity, but are unable to eat or drink with the resident at this time.

  • IPAC Flooring Replacement

    The carpeting on the main floor will be replaced with vinyl plank glue-down flooring. The work will take place over two weeks, each day between 7:30 pm and 4:30 am starting March 2, 2022. The carpet will first be removed over the course of three or four days before the new floor will be glued down. Maintenance staff will be on-site 3 pm to 11 pm for that two weeks to assist. There is the potential for dust and the furnace will be removed in areas as this is taking place. We will try to prevent any trip hazards but please be vigilant when you are walking in the area and let us know immediately if you have any concerns. This project is being funded through the Ministry of LTC Infection Prevention and Containment funding.

  • Employee Recognition Program

    The leadership team completed a survey in the fall to determine what recognition meant to Staff.

    We have started a program based on the feedback that they provided.

    So, watch out for these posters throughout the home along with the bins to be able to participate in the program.

    We are hoping to continue to improve and are looking for your feedback.
