Jeff Lehman discusses Muskoka’s urgent need for more affordable housing and a new approach being considered by District Council to build homes faster and at a lower cost.
The proposal involves creating a District-owned corporation to operate a factory that uses robotics to manufacture wood-frame housing components. This approach could help save taxpayers money, support local jobs and contractors, reduce pressure on the rental market, prioritize Canadian materials and create a safer work environment.

Factory-built housing won’t replace local workers. Approximately 70% of each project will still rely on local contractors, builders and trades. The proposed facility is also expected to create 20 to 30 new jobs in Muskoka.
By producing components locally, we can build non-market housing faster and more reliably while creating more opportunities for site preparation, assembly and finishing work.
