The Fairvern Long-Term Care Home redevelopment project in Huntsville aims to create a true home environment that puts residents first. The new Fairvern will be home to 160 residents and will replace the existing Fairvern. The new home will focus on promoting independence, enhancing quality of life, and providing a supportive setting for both residents and staff.

The Fairvern redevelopment project will create a modern, resident-centred long-term care home designed to feel truly like home. The new building will welcome 160 residents and replace the existing Fairvern, with a strong focus on promoting independence, enhancing quality of life, and supporting residents and staff in a safe, comfortable environment.

The design incorporates best practices in resident-directed care, infection prevention, energy efficiency reflecting the District’s commitment to delivering high-quality and sustainable long-term care. The home’s “small house” layout, based on a social rather than medical model of care, further supports resident independence and overall well-being.

  • Projected Completion Date: August 2026
  • Projected Move-In Date: October 2026

Current Status

District leadership is actively completing all components of the Occupancy Plan for submission to the Ministry of Long-Term Care in December 2025. This plan includes staffing preparation, orientation schedules, operational readiness, and the resident move plan. A second submission will be provided three months before completion to address Ministry feedback and finalize all requirements.

What’s Ahead for Fairvern in 2026

Fairvern is preparing for a milestone year in 2026 as it begins its transition toward a Social Model of Care, an approach that prioritizes resident choice, comfort, and meaningful daily life. Beginning in January, staff will work together to shape what a “Day in the Life” will look like in the new Small House model and identify the tools, training, and supports needed to bring this vision to life.

This shift represents an important step in creating a more home-like, person-centred environment for residents.

As part of the Fairvern redevelopment, a new Early Learning and Child Care Centre (ELCC) will be co-located on the campus, offering licensed care for up to 64 children aged 0–4. The centre is anticipated to open in late 2026, helping to meet the growing need for high-quality, affordable child care in Huntsville.

Embedded within the long-term care home, the child care centre will create a unique intergenerational environment where children, residents, and families can interact through both casual encounters and planned programming. This approach fosters community well-being by reducing social isolation for seniors, promoting a sense of purpose and connection, and offering meaningful learning opportunities across generations.

In addition to supporting a vibrant campus community, the Fairvern ELCC will contribute broader community benefits, including:

    • Improved access to licensed child care, including extended hours and days of care

    • Enhanced intergenerational programming for both children and Fairvern residents

    • Support for recruitment and retention of long-term care staff

Families interested in licensed child care will be able to join the waitlist once it opens in the coming months. Please do not contact Fairvern directly. More information will be shared as details become available.
