On June 14, 2019, the MECP formally directed the District to remove/decommission all unlicensed bin sites by April 30, 2023.
More information on the Bin Site Transition Plan can be found here.

The 2021 Lakeside Waste Collection schedule is now available! We look forward to seeing you on Sundays this summer.

What is Lakeside Waste Collection?
The District has been working closely with our consulting team and the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) for approved waste collection service for water-access and island residents.
You told us you needed a “made-in-Muskoka”, convenient garbage disposal alternative from boat-to-bin. We heard you! We have scheduled lakeside collection events this summer.

What can I expect?
Waste collection trucks will be present each week at a dedicated location for a scheduled period. These events will be supervised and staff will be on-site to monitor disposal activity. Events will be accessible via boat.

The collection truck is equipped to accept residential household bagged garbage and recycling only.
As we monitor COVID-19, please secure all waste and tie bags shut.

  • Up to 3 standard-sized bags of household bagged garbage, bagged/tied securely
  • Recycling (containers and paper products) in clear/transparent bags (please ensure your material is secure)

This program is intended for island and water-access properties in the Township of Muskoka Lakes.
This program is not intended for residents who receive curbside collection - please also be reminded we cannot accept large/bulky items. Bulky items can be taken to any District Waste Facility during normal operating hours.

We need your help.
We ask for your patience and understanding as we work through program details during the COVID-19 emergency. Lakeside Waste Collection events planned for summer 2021 will be closely monitored to protect the health and safety of our staff and the public.

Abandoning garbage on the ground at the collection event location before or following the scheduled event is considered illegal dumping. If this is observed, an illegal dumping investigation will be undertaken with additional measures including, but not limited to, stopping future collection events at that location. We want to remain welcome to host events at these locations and dumping will put that in jeopardy.

We are relying on the cooperation of our dedicated Muskoka community to respect this special service and, at the same time, preserve the beautiful Muskoka environment – the reason we all choose to live here.
