What's Happening:

Stage 1, Phase 2 of the Bay and Beyond project in Gravenhurst is nearly complete for this year - we’re on track to reopen the road this winter.

Phase 2 October update:

  • Connecting to the new permanent watermain: Properties will soon transition from the temporary setup to the newly installed permanent watermain, ensuring a more reliable water service.
  • Road and Sidewalk Rebuilding: Reconstruction of Bay Street is underway, including the installation of new sidewalks, curbs and temporary streetlights to improve the lighting along Bay Street. This year's work will be capped off with a base layer of asphalt being laid down, including protective “ramping” to provide a smooth transition and shield concrete curbs during winter snowplowing. The final top layer of asphalt and the permanent streetlighting will be completed next year.
  • What is ‘ramping’? Ramping is a method used to temporarily smooth the edges between layers of asphalt and concrete curbs. By creating a gentle slope, or “ramp,” it protects the edges of the curb from damage during snowplowing in the winter. This helps with accessibility and reducing tripping hazards for winter operations. View the photo gallery on the right-hand menu to see a photo.
  • Bay Street Reopening: This year, we finished Phase 1 and are nearing completion of Phase 2! This means the Muskoka Wharf area will fully reopen for winter access, giving residents and visitors clear routes through the area. In spring, we’ll be back to complete the final touches and begin Stage 2, Phase 3.
  • Holiday Events, Tree Lighting and Santa Claus Parade: There’s plenty happening in Gravenhurst this November and December, even as we finish up Phase 2 in the Muskoka Wharf area through year-end! Visit the Town of Gravenhurst and Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce websites for all the latest event details and updates.

2025: What’s happening?

We know you’re eager to hear what spring and the next Stage will bring. We are not slowing down over the winter. The project team and crews will still be hard at work, planning, and investigating site conditions and preparing for Stage 2, to keep us on schedule. As soon as conditions allow in the spring, we’ll be ready to dive back in and keep things moving smoothly.

Bay and Beyond is all about improving Gravenhurst — one street, one pipe, one flush at a time. Reliable drinking water and wastewater services are essential, and this work will make sure these basics keep working for you, even if you don’t think about them every day.

Stay tuned in November for more updates, where we’ll share the road reopening date for winter access, a preview of what’s ahead in the spring, and the date for our next Community Information Session.

Bay and Beyond: More than a construction project.

Ever wonder where your toilet water goes or how clean drinking water gets to your tap? The Bay and Beyond infrastructure project is a three-year partnership with the District of Muskoka and the Town of Gravenhurst, designed to upgrade the critical underground systems that have been in place since 1944. This project will ensure the reliable delivery of clean drinking water and efficient wastewater management, services we often don't think about.

Here's a glimpse at more improvements as part of the Bay and Beyond project:

  • Creating more opportunities for active transportation
  • New multi-use trail from North Muldrew Lake Road to the Gravenhurst Farmers’ Market
  • New, improved parking area to better accommodate the busy Farmers Market
  • Upgrades to intersections and traffic signals, including enhancements to accessibility
  • New pedestrian crosswalk downtown at Sharpe Street and Muskoka Road South
  • New street lights from Cherokee Lane to Greavette Street
  • New, smooth driving surfaces and improved drainage
  • Replacement of sidewalks and curbs
  • and replacement of the 80 year-old water pipes, watermains, storm and sanitary sewers underground - to keep Gravenhurst connected.
