2025 Construction Season
Project Progress To Date
New road surface and paint markings, including new bike lanes along Bay St. from Steamship Bay Rd to Sarah St.
Upgraded traffic signals at the intersection of N Muldrew Lake/Steamship Bay Rd. and Bay St., and the Boston Pizza pedestrian crossing.
New underground pipes beneath Bay St. for water, wastewater, and stormwater replacing the existing ones that had been in place since the 1940s.
Properties provided with a new service and connected to the new water and sanitary main, ensuring more reliable service for years to come.
Enhancements completed by the Town of Gravenhurst include a new multi-use trail from the Wharf Sports Field to N Muldrew Lake Rd., sidewalks, streetlights along Bay St. to enhance safety and visibility, and additional parking at the Wharf Sports Field.
Upgrades to James St. with a fresh surface treatment, complete with new paint markings, temporary pedestrian crosswalk and adjusted stop bars at the James St./Muskoka Rd. intersection (near Shoppers Drug Mart).

What’s next? The timelines for the project have been adjusted. Construction on Bay St. between Sarah St. and Canada Post (101 Bay St.) is now scheduled for the 2026 construction season. This decision has been made following a thorough review of the current progress and site conditions. While steady advancement has been achieved on the project, unforeseen challenges, combined with seasonal constraints, have impacted the overall pace of the project.
Work from Canada Post to Gull Lake Park will also be rescheduled, with an updated timeline to be confirmed once a new contract is awarded and permits are secured. This final stage of the project will complete the transformation through the downtown/commercial section of Gravenhurst.
Further updates will be provided through this project page as the project team works towards finalizing the revised schedules. The project team remains committed to working diligently with all partners and the public to minimize disruptions while delivering high-quality results that meet long-term needs. The work completed to date sets the foundation for the remaining work.
Bay & Beyond Background
The Bay and Beyond project is a multi-year partnership between the District of Muskoka and the Town of Gravenhurst to upgrade aging infrastructure dating back to 1944. This essential work will help ensure reliable access to clean drinking water and efficient wastewater services, which we all depend on every day, even if we don’t always see them.
But it’s not just what’s happening underground; Bay and Beyond is also bringing big improvements to how we move and connect around town. Here’s a snapshot of what’s included:
Creating more opportunities for active transportation
New, multi-use trail from North Muldrew Lake Road to the Wharf Sports Field
New, improved parking area at the Wharf Sports Field
Upgrades to intersections and traffic signals, including enhancements to accessibility
New pedestrian crosswalk downtown at Sharpe Street and Muskoka Road South
New street lights from Cherokee Lane to Greavette Street
New, smooth driving surfaces and improved drainage
Replacement of sidewalks and curbs
and most importantly, the full replacement of 80-year-old underground infrastructure (water pipes, storm and sanitary sewers, and watermains) to keep Gravenhurst connected for generations.
